Point Guard – Our featured site for the point guard position is Star Fantasy Leagues

Top Play:

Chris Paul (LAC) – Portland has improved their defense dramatically this season. After finishing in the bottom third of the league in defensive efficiency against point guards the last two season, they rank fourth this year. Paul has excelled in head-to-head matchups with Damian Lillard, averaging 21 points, 3.2 rebounds, 11.2 assists, and 3.2 steals per game. The price point is fair around the industry, but I think this is a great time to pay up for Paul. The Clippers-Blazers game is one of the higher total (206) games with a tight spread (Blazers by four) and both teams are rested which should help elevate starter’s minutes slightly.

Next-in-line: Ty Lawson (DEN) – Lawson has been asked to shoulder an incredible load for the Nuggets all season but there is reason to believe he’ll be even more extended on Wednesday. The Nuggets traded for Jameer Nelson and it’s unclear if he’ll be available tonight. Even if he is, it’s unlikely he plays much as a point guard having to learn a new offense. Lawson faces a Mavericks defense that ranks 17th in defensive efficiency against point guards and 18th in overall team defensive efficiency. Vegas has posted a 212.5 total on the game with the Nuggets favored by 2.5 points. Lawson is the most direct way to get exposure to the Nuggets offense, and he’s priced affordably around the industry.

Value Plays:

Mario Chalmers (MIA) – Yesterday we noted Chalmers appealing price point but lamented his recent low usage rates. Well with Dwyane Wade unlikely to play tonight (left last night with a hamstring strain), we no longer have concerns over Chalmers’ usage. With Wade off the floor this season Chalmers has posted a 23.2 percent usage rate compared to a 16 percent usage rate when Wade is on the floor. This is a big change in aggressiveness and the opportunity comes at a time when Chalmers’ price point is nearing a trough for the season. I think he’s clearly the best value play at point guard and arguably the best value play across the industry. The matchup isn’t appealing against the Warriors who rank second in defensive efficiency against point guards and are going to be huge favorites, but Chalmers low price tag doesn’t require much to pave the way towards value.
