Welcome to our 2017 HSBC Champions DraftKings Fantasy Picks and Pro-Tip.
Another week on the tour, another no-cut event in Asia. This time at a familiar course, though. The HSBC Championship is played at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, where Hideki Matsuyama ran away with it last year shooting -23 to route the field by seven strokes. While you will find him atop our projections again this week it is definitely not a course history play, as his results the prior three years included two withdrawals and a 41st place finish. From a statistical perspective, Sheshan International rewarded ball strikers, as some of the other names atop the leaderboard were names like Henrik Stenson, Bill Haas, Francesco Molinari and Daniel Berger. Guys who pack an adequate punch but are not known as bombers by any means. And of course, with the no-cut event, we are again looking at a situation where we want to chase birdies and DK scoring with our value picks while we are happy chasing finish and win bonus probability with our top-end picks. With a small field and many players drawing dead to win, it seems roster construction is as critical as handicapping. We recommend leveraging our ownership projections to ensure your lineup doesn’t have high total ownership, meaning if you choose to play chalky players up top like Marc Leishman, make sure to seek out low owned value in the salary saving buckets.
