News and Notes

The Mayakoba Golf Classic will be played at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Last year’s event played as one of the easiest on tour and at 6,987 yards and a Par 71 it ranks 44th out of 50 courses in par adjusted distance. The winning score each year has been -18 or better with the cut line likely to range somewhere from -1 to -3. El Camaleon gave up the 17th most eagles and 13th most birdies on tour creating a fantasy friendly scoring environment that will emphasis the importance of getting all six of your golfers thru to the weekend.

We had flagged Bud Cauley as a guy to watch early this season with an injury de-railing his 2018 season we were unsure what to expect of his game. With two events now under his belt and a 46th at the Safeway and 10th at the Shriners we’re comfortable trusting the value within the DataGolf projections.

Course Fit and Course History

There is no Shotlink data historically for this event and a less fun cut sweat this week. DataGolf’s historic event data can still let us get a feel for the course. Graeme McDowell, Russell Knox, Kevin Streelman and Charles Howell III have performed strongest at this event over the years with 78 collective rounds between them. When playing at their best these players share similar characteristics — above average accuracy, strong on approach or with scrambling, and decent putters (save for CH3). With the coastal elements of El Camaleon and short length, it is easy to draw some parallels to the RBC Heritage event played at Harbour Town. Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, and Jim Furyk are a few names that all rate as positive values in DataGolf’s projections and have also played well at the RBC Heritage over the years — another run on the “course fit” box for this week with a lean towards accuracy and short game.
