News and Notes

The 2019 Northern Trust Open kicks off the FedEx Cup Playoffs as a 125-man field will play in the last event of the season featuring a cut to T70 and ties. There will be a lot of emphasis on the broadcasts this week about FedEx Cup Playoff position but for DFS purposes what we can expect is a slightly below average environment for fantasy scoring (there are just 3 Par 5s) where placement points will play a slightly increased role.

The Northern Trust Open will be hosted by Liberty National which last hosted the event during the 2013 PGATOUR season. Adam Scott won the 2013 event with a score of 11-under par followed closely by Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Graham Delaet and Gary Woodland in a log jam at 10-under par.

That year, the course saw the ball-strikers rise to the top of the leaderboard with 17.3 percent of strokes gained deviation driven by SGOTT and 38.3 percent driven by approach play totaling more than 55 percent of the deviation in scoring driven by T2G play and just under 30 percent driven from putting compared to a tour average of 35 percent.

Course History

With the event played at a rotation of courses and the last one held more than 5 years ago DFSers should be cautious leaning too much on one sample. However, the Strokes Gained T2G variation of the leaderboard is shown below and features an all-around ball strikers. At the time Tiger Woods was OWGR #1, Rose #4, Scott #5, while Bubba Watson and Jason Day were both inside the Top 20 respectively, further reinforcing that layering too much course history from the one event sample could be more dangerous than beneficial.
