News and Notes

The 2019 Open Championship will be played at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The course this week will play as a Par 71 at just over 7300 yards long and hasn’t hosted a professional event since the 2012 Irish Open where Jamie Donaldson won with a score of 18-under par. With one of the Par 5s converted to a Par 4 this week, and several other holes redesigned, it is reasonable to expect a winning score somewhere around 10-under or 12-under if the conditions aren’t extreme. The wind conditions impact not just the scoring environment (which can be customized in our fantasy model) but also whether or not wave stacking comes into play, and fantasy golfers looking for an edge should wait as long as possible to build their lineups.

The European Tour published an analysis on the best links players which analyzed 172 players with at least 10 starts. That article highlighted a few of the top performers including Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia as the best links players in the world. Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, and Francesco Molinari also had good success on links with 10 starts while Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm were some of the better players who hadn’t yet met the sample criteria. This list notably includes many of the best golfers in the world but digging deeper into players that had performed best relative to their personal baselines started to pop up names like Ryan Fox, Eddie Pepperell, Tyrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood and Richie Ramsey as names that improve most relative to their personal baselines. One parallel between all of them is that generally strokes gained approach seems to be a common thread with these players. While the DataGolf model has baked in player skill and form it doesn’t typically place any value on links specific skill or Open Championship history.
