News and Notes

The 2019 WGC St Jude is a modified version of the previous Fed Ex St Jude Classic which is played at TPC Southwind. TPC Southwind plays as a Par 70 at 7238 yards long that ranks inside the 15th longest courses on tour in par adjusted distance and features among the 15th narrowest fairways. It has historically played as one of the more challenging tour stops though that is also partially attributable to what has historically been a below-average strength of field.

The course had the most water balls on tour and has small greens which have historically set it up as a course that favors strokes gained approach more than the tour average stop. Strokes gained approach has driven more than 40 percent of the deviation in scoring with only 30 percent coming from putting compared to the tour average of 35 percent. While that could change this year with a stronger field it is the best barometer we have as to how the course could play.

Shane Lowry has withdrawn, do not roster him.

Gary Woodland’s wife is due in the coming weeks with twins and is currently on bed rest. If she goes into labor he’ll likely WD given the complications they had with their first set of twins and is a risky play.

Strongest Recent Form Outright

Patrick Cantlay 3-1-21-15-41

Shane Lowry 8-2-28-34-1

Adam Scott 18-8-2-7-CUT

Rory McIlroy CUT-1-9-34-CUT

Webb Simpson 18-29-2-16-30

Strongest relative to their personal baseline: Danny Willett, Henrik Stenson, Patrick Reed

Course History

Most of the field this week hasn’t played the event 5 times over the previous 10 years given where it was stuck in the schedule but the alluring WGC prize pools and guaranteed payday has brought most of the best in a tune-up before the Fed Ex Cup run. Dustin Johnson (two wins), Brooks Koepka (2nd and a 3rd), Phil Mickelson (12-9-2-3-11-2-58), Chez Reavie and Billy Horschel are among the few names that can claim both a decent volume of events and strong track record at this venue, albeit in much weaker fields.
