Welcome to the 2020 Genesis Open Fantasy Picks and Pro-Tip
News and Notes
The 2020 Genesis Open brings us the strongest field we have seen yet this year as many of the world’s best will be on display in the 120-man invitational field. Combine that with the NBA All-Star Break and four rounds of Shotlink access and the PGA DFS sweats should be real.
The event is held at Riviera Country Club, which will play again as a Par 71 at 7322 yards long. Riviera is above average in par adjusted distance and features wider than average fairways making it a course that doesn’t place much demand for accuracy off of the tee, rendering it almost irrelevant. Instead, look for an approach and around-the-green heavy event which finds its closest comparable courses in Kapalua, Monterey Pensinsula and notably Augusta National.
New to the projections this year is the inclusion of course fit from DataGolf for every player in the field, which you can find above and highlights the importance of second shots and short-game this week relative to other PGATOUR venues. Some of the strongest strokes per round course fit adjustments this week went to Phil Mickelson (+0.18), Jordan Spieth (+0.12), and Justin Thomas (+0.09).
Also notable is that Riviera has the 2nd most predictive course history of any PGATOUR stop trailing only one of its closest comp courses – Augusta National. Some of the notable course history bumps in our projections (strokes per round) include JB Holmes (+0.36), Dustin Johnson (+0.24), Bubba Watson (+0.18), and Adam Scott (+0.13) while if you draw the close parallels to Augusta you could also consider Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose.
PGA DFS is as much a balance of projection and ownership as it is finding the right plays. These concepts were covered in our PGA DFS Strategy Guide which should be referenced throughout the season as you look to hone in your strategy.
