5/29 MLB DFS Review: Diamondbacks Outfielders Were Venomous

Yet again it seemed like every single pitcher hit on Friday night. Nine pitchers had at least 24.4 DraftKings (DK) FP in the night slate alone headlined by Taijuan Walker. Heading into the slate I wrote about just how terrible he had been and how I wanted to stack against him. That plan backfired because despite his terrible season, he threw the best game of his young career. His past two starts it seemed like he had absolutely no idea where the ball was going (eight BBs in 9.1 IP) when it left his hand. Well tonight was a complete contrast because his control was pinpoint and he struck out eight batters without walking anyone. His eight strikeouts were third behind Trevor Bauer‘s 10 and Matt Harvey/Francisco Liriano‘s 11. Again, the slate was just dominated by pitchers with few hitters going off.

The slate began with a bang as Harvey struck out the side to begin the first. It ended equally as impactful with a Derek Norris walk off grand slam after striking out in his previous four at-bats. Here are the other players who contributed in a big way for their owners on Friday:

Player Stat Line DK FP FD FP
Taijaun Walker 8 IP, 2 H, 8 K, W 36.8 20
Chad Bettis 8 IP, 2 H, 7 K, W 34.8 19
Troy Tulowitzki 2 R, 2 1B, 2 HR, 2 RBI 34 14
Josh Hamilton 3 R, 1 BB, 2 HR, 2 RBI 32 13.75
Hector Santiago 7.1 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 7 K, W 30.89 18.33
Adam Lind 1 R, 1 1B, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI 26 11
Josh Donaldson 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI 23 9.25

…..and this assembly of players disappointed:

Player Stat Line Approximate Ownership
Brandon Moss 0 8%
Michael Brantley 0 29%
Mark Teixiera 0 10%
Mike Trout 1 1B, CS 30%
Joc Pederson 1 BB 10%
George Springer 1 BB 15%

What a bummer for Mike Trout owners as he always costs an arm and a leg to roster and he scores one FP. I suppose it’s better than zero but definitely not what you sign up for when you add his name to a DFS team. Fortunately for the names below, none of them happened to roster him. Let’s take a look at the winning lineups and those who set them across multiple DFS sites:

Lesson #1: Do not be afraid to use all three outfielders on the same team

Although it was not a night where full on six player stacks won tournaments, the diamondbacks outfield led people to victory. None of the outfielders cost most than $4,400 on DK so it was actually an affordable stack. I think a mistake some beginner players make is being afraid to use too many people on the same team. For instance, they do not want to use a whole Cubs infield or full outfield of the same team. Let tonight be the lesson that these can absolutely be winning strategies. All three of the outfielders homered. Some nights if a pitcher is going bad then he will be serving it up to everyone. This presents an opportunity for serious upside. Do not be afraid to take it regardless of positional eligibility.

Lesson #2: What happened yesterday does not affect what happens today

Troy Tulowitzki is amidst a down season and has been frustrating his owners almost nightly. Heading into the night, he was hitting .266/.286/.403 in 43 games with just two home runs. No matter how many times he had disappointed this season, he would have made up for it if you had rostered him in this game. Tulowitzki ranks second on the Rockies in career wOBA against LHP (behind Wilin Rosario) and the shortstop position was absolutely dreadful on Friday. If you loved him heading into the night after the recent results then kudos to you. If you used him just because of the state of the position, you found a diamond in the rough. The same can be said for Josh Hamilton who came into the night just 3-15 (.200) on the season. He was too talented to stay down for long and he too homered twice. Past results do not signify future results as these two instances clearly imply. A guy can be struggling, take one good swing and win a GPP for owners. It just shows that the theory of avoiding cold hitters is falsified and should not be followed.

Did you get the Troy Tulowitzki double dong or was it a tilt night? Discuss now on the forums:
