July 10th MLB DFS Picks: A Bumgarner Always Pays his Debts
TGIF fellow DailyRoto goers! If you recall a few weeks ago, I intertwined my picks article with a list of characters from “The Office.” In the spirit of keeping things light, especially on my dog Baxter’s birthday eve (he turns one tomorrow!!), I’m going to do the same thing today. Only this time – I’ll be using the hit HBO show, “Game of Thrones.”
As always be sure to tune in to the forecasts around the league tonight. If you’re a premium member, DR meterologist Mark Paquette will hook you up. If you’re not, become one, so then Mark can hook you up.
Catcher: Yasmani Grandal
G.o.T. Character: Khal Drogo
I realize this is a very aggressive comparison, but it’s fitting. Grandal is a big dude with a strong chin – see also: Khal Drogo. I’m certain that Dodgers fans have been more than welcoming of Grandal’s great start in Los Angeles, and they might love him even more after tonight. He’s currently clubbing the baseball to the tune of a .244 ISO and a .395 wOBA and has a matchup with Jimmy Nelson tonight. Nelson has shown some brilliance this season, but he’s allowing 1.6 HR/9 to left-handers. Grandal homer, anyone?
First Baseman: Joey Votto
G.o.T. Character: Bran Stark
If you’re up to date with G.o.T. you might have forgotten about Bran Stark since season five managed to show absolutely zero of him. Let me remind you that he’s an innocent, but very powerful young child. Votto, while a grown man, has all those features. Quiet, innocent (he’s Canadian) and powerful. I don’t expect him to be dropping any bombs out of Marlin’s Park tonight, but his matchup with David Phelps makes him an excellent cash game play. He’s had quite the resurgence this year (.211 ISO, .388 wOBA).
Second Baseman: Jace Peterson
G.o.T. Character: Tommen Baratheon
Both Jace and Tommen sit upon a “golden” throne. Tommen is a ruler of sorts, while Jace gets to hit at the top of the order in a great ballpark and run scoring environment tonight. He isn’t a great hitter, but he does provide stolen base upside and a bit of salary cap relief to gain exposure to Coors Field. I realize the comparison is a stretch, leave me alone.
Third Baseman: Josh Donaldson
G.o.T. Character: The Late Eddard Stark
Simple. Both of these guys are made of greatness. The comparison is not a premonition or anything, I just simply believe that Donaldson is of the Stark mold. Donaldson gets a matchup with a left-handed pitcher, and that should be the only impetus you need to roster him tonight. He’s mashes southpaws and will have no trouble with Danny Duffy tonight.
Shortstop: Troy Tulowitzki
G.o.T. Character: Stannis Baratheon
This comparison stems from the irritating and frustrating nature of both Stannis and Tulo. At times, these guys are awesome and you’re rooting on their every step. Other times, you’re cursing them out and throwing things at the television. Tulowitzki doesn’t have the greatest matchup against Shelby Miller tonight, but the fact that he’s playing at Coors and is by far the most highly skilled shortstop makes him a great play. His price is accessible, and who knows, maybe he’ll make Shelby’s night, dark, and full of terrors.
Outfield: Charlie Blackmon
G.o.T. Character: Robert Baratheon
Simple comparison – it’s the beard. Blackmon will lead off for the Rockies in the best potential run scoring environment tonight. He’ll be facing a decent Shelby Miller, but one that has struggled in the past with flyballs and the home run. Add in the fact that Blackmon does a great job of getting on base and is a stolen base threat once there.
Starting Pitcher: Madison Bumgarner
G.o.T. Character: Tyrion Lannister
So they aren’t the same size, but they’re the same caliber person. Tyrion is a boss, my favorite and perhaps the best character in the series and Bum has a cakey matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies. Tyrion outsmarts everyone and rarely loses. You won’t lose with Bum tonight.
For obvious reasons, I couldn’t quite find a player to compare to Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and a handful of other characters. But perhaps another time…winter is coming.
