MLB DFS GPP Recap: A Star in Houston

Major League Baseball is lucky – and so are DFS players. So far this season a huge influx of young players has taken the league by storm. Top prospect after top prospect has been called to their respective big league club, and they’re performing. The list of performers is long: Pederson, Correa, Bryant, Russell, Buxton and it drones on. The past two nights though, the rookie showcase has had a pair of unanimous victors in Carlos Correa and Maikel Franco (sorry Kris Bryant).

Franco was the centerpiece of most of last night’s winners, along with some other big performances from the gentlemen in the table below.

FD Points

Maikel Franco 2H, 2R, 1BB, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI 33 13.75
Brett Gardner 2R, 2H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1BB 23 9.50
Madison Bumgarner 7.1 IP, 14 K, 2ER, 1BB, 5HA 36.9 19.33
Carlos Correa 3R, 3H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4RBI 32 12.25
Cesar Hernandez 2R, 3H, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1HBP 19 6.75

You’ll notice that most of the winning teams I’ve included below include at least a few of these players with a central focus on the game in Yankee Stadium.

This isn’t of any surprise, as the Yankees carried a team total just as heavy as the two teams playing in Coors Field last night, but again it was a night where going away from Coors proved to be the deciding factor for the top teams. Not because the game in Coors didn’t result in solid player production, because a 15 run affair certainly played well for fantasy purposes, but because the game in Yankee Stadium held very low percentage owned players, particularly the Philadelphia Phillies.

For example, Maikel Franco and Cesar Hernandez, two of the top performing players last night were owned in small doses, including only 7.2 and 5.5 percent owned respectively in the Moonshot on DraftKings.

Couple the low percentage owned on the Phillies players with the play of Madison Bumgarner (the top pitching option of the night) and the low ownership levels of shortstop superkid, Carlos Correa, and you had yourself a dandy time last night while hauling in the big bucks.

The plays for DraftKings really followed the needed nightly trend for success. Most teams included Cesar Hernandez and Maikel Franco with a sprinkling of other Yankees but most importantly all of these teams included Madison Bumgarner and his 14 strikeouts. Strikeouts are king in daily fantasy baseball, and particularly at DraftKings where a big performance strikeout wise can save an otherwise poor start from a starting pitcher. Without Bumgarner, it was hard to compete last night regardless of your offense.

FanDuel

Super Rally, $5 Entry, $20,000 to First Place

Team: Mike Montgomery, Wellington Castillo, Paul Goldschmidt, Logan Forsythe, Maikel Franco, Carlos Correa, Jay Bruce, Brett Gardner, Carlos Beltran

$140K Monster, $300 Entry, $15,000 to First Place

Winner: 007_fan
Score: 72

Team: Carlos Martinez, Brian McCann, Jose Abreu, Kolten Wong, Maikel Franco, Carlos Correa, Brett Gardner, David Peralta, Seth Smith.

FanDuel always opens itself up to some creativity due to efficiency scoring (-.25 per out) and the one pitcher format. Notice that the Super Rally winner, “Junito,” crushed it from all angles last night. He had some of the top performers that were necessary in Maikel Franco, Correa and Brett Gardner, but also got Coors exposure thanks to his Mike Montgomery play.

Overall though, regardless of the site, you needed a pair of soon to be superstars to anchor your lineups.

Congrats to all the winners from last night!
