MLB GPP Recap: What Comes NAT-ural

Four score and seven years ago…that was the last time stacking at Coors Field was the most successful strategy of a given night of MLB DFS. Time and time again as DFS players we anticipate the unraveling of events that we did not expect to happen. A five extra-base hit game from Jackie Bradley Jr, a no-hitter from Chris Heston, and on and on it goes. Sometimes though, we guess correctly. Exactly what is supposed to happen – happens, and everyone is left smiling…well, except for those who jumped ship.

Last night, the Washington Nationals took a huge swing, and hammered their legislative roots down the throats of the weed smoking Denver natives (this is speculation, not everyone in Denver smokes weed).

Here’s a look at the top performers from the night.

Unlike most weeks where it takes a fairly unusual stack, or an oddball “fill-in” player to win a major tournament, last night was fairly straightforward. Bypassing the super-contrarian and mega-different stacks, full stacks including the Washington Nationals or Detroit Tigers, and any combination of the two teams took the cake last night.

The Nationals stacks were to be expected, as any team that waltzes in to Coors Field garners some cash game and tournament exposure. The Tigers on the other hand, while being lesser owned and perhaps more contrarian, took on a struggling Jason Hammel in a game at Wrigley Field with the wind blowing out.

To compare the ownership of the two, I’ve combined the first four hitters from each game in the following table and their accompanying ownership levels in the FanDuel Grand Slam and DraftKings Tuesday Special.

Team

DK Tuesday Special

FanDuel Grand Slam

Nationals 46.9% 37.38%
Tigers 7.6% 6.22%

For two wildly successful stacks, you can see the crazy difference in terms of ownership from two of last night’s largest tournaments. Regardless though, even if you took the likeminded approach of rostering Nationals, you had yourself a whale of a night.

Congrats to all the winners from last night! One day I’ll be talking about my Cubbies here!
