NBA GPP Recap: Still Some Gasol in the Tank

You know that point in a player’s career where everyone thinks they have become irrelevant, or even a detriment to their team? I think that is probably where Kobe is at now, and maybe some of you forgot about Pau Gasol of the Chicago Bulls. He’s been trending in the wrong direction from a fantasy perspective this season, but last night, he showed us he has a little left in the tank.

Below I’ve included Pau with some of the others that dominated in GPPs from last night.

PG Reggie Jackson 34Pts, 16Ast, 1Stl, 3Reb, 3TO 65.25 60.6
SG Kobe Bryant 31Pts, 3Ast, 1Stl, 2Reb, 2TO 41 37.9
SF Nic Batum 17Pts, 8Reb, 3Ast, 3Stl, 2Blk, 2TO 41 39.1

C Marcin Gortat 18Pts, 10Reb, 1Ast, 1Blk, 2Stl, 3TO 38 34.5

Note: If a player is listed above, this does not mean he was the top scoring player at his position. Also, player positioning may change in the future as positional eligibility varies from FanDuel and DraftKings.

“Upper-Tier”Priced Paradise

Each week I’ve been identifying a certain range of salaries that have been exploited on FanDuel in GPPs and have led to top leaderboard finishes. In recent weeks it’s been a middle ground, a range from $5,000-$6,500 that has been exploited, however, last night, the range from $6,750-$8,500 was the most crucial range of salaries. Take a look at the players from that range that plastered the lineups at the top of FanDuel GPPs.

Player

Salary

FD Points

Slam Ownership %

Kristaps Porzingis $7,200 38 37%
John Wall $8,100 57.9 32.4%
Reggie Jackson $7,400 60.6 15.5%
Pau Gasol $7,600 58.3 7.5%

You might notice that two of these players made their way into the top performers table, and most all of them are amongst the top lineups on both FanDuel and DraftKings last night. Most nights in the NBA is a fight between lineup construction strategies. Do we want to stay balanced, and take mainly players from the aforementioned price range? Or is there enough value to allow for the use of minimum price players and the top studs (Steph, Anthony Davis, etc)?

Last night it seems that using the “middle-upper class” was the way to the money.

Unsuspected Hero

GPPs are often won by unsuspecting heroes – a player that possesses a great upside, but has been scarred by recency bias or a fluctuation in minutes. Pau Gasol hasn’t had quite the season that was anticipated when the Bulls shifted philosophies a tad under Fred Hoiberg, but that doesn’t entirely wipe out his potential. Last night, Gasol was the guy that won GPPs.

I’ve already noted on his salary and his production from last night in the following sections, but the most important note from Gasol’s night was his ownership level.

Player

DK Ownership %

FD Ownership %

Pau Gasol 9.9% 7.5%

As you can tell, it’s not like absolutely everyone avoided using Pau last night, but his ownership percentages pale in comparison to the others from the top performers table. Pau won it last night.

Create-A-Player

I’ve been using this section to focus on players that have the ability to fill the box score from every possible angle. Last week it was Draymond Green, the week before, James Harden. Although last night, John Wall was unable to crack the top performers table (due to Reggie Jackson‘s blowup) he again put up a monster game after an early season of disappointing performances.

Take a look at Wall’s line last night, as accompanied by his ownership percentages in the big GPPs on both FanDuel and DraftKings

Player

DK Points / Ownership %

FD Points / Ownership %

John Wall 63.75 / 36.8 57.9 / 32.4%

Wall’s matchup with the futile Lakers defense was one that was capitalized on by a bunch of lineups last night, as noted by the ownership percentages, but without using him, you put yourself in a tough position to make up ground, especially given the fact that his salary didn’t break the bank last night. Expect Wall’s salary to start trending upwards, as his potential performance is too high relative to his price.

Utility?

I’ve continued to take a look at the utility usage on DraftKings in tournaments. Tracking this should give you some insight as to what you should be doing with your utility spot in tournaments, as this usage comes from the top 20 lineups that are finishing in the $20 Shootaround on DraftKings.

Position

Current Week

Total

PG 5 42
SG 0 19
SF 2 12
PF 5 17
C 8 30

Again, the trend continues, as now the center and point guard positions are easily running away with most often used position. I’ve talked about this in the past, but this seems to be a trend set in the “safety” of the players at these positions, as well as the overwhelming depth of the positions as compared to the other available positions. On a given night there are only three or four SG options we’re considering for it’s own spot, let alone using an extra in a utility spot.

Congrats to the winners!
