It was the best of times and it was the worst of times for players that went all in on chalky players in Week 9 of the 2020 NFL season. On the bright side, Dalvin Cook was the highest owned player in the DraftKings NFL $4M Fantasy Football Millionaire contest at 38.58%, and he did everything players could hope for and then some with over 200 yards rushing on the way to 42.2 DraftKings points. On the downside, all of Tyler Lockett, Chase Edmonds, Justin Jackson, James Conner, David Johnson, and Noah Fant were major disappointments in the top 10 owned players on the slate. While some players may have been scared off the cheap QB route for lineup construction after Jimmy Garoppolo flopped badly in Week 8 versus the Seahawks, two cheap QBs were the route to million-dollar scores in Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater. While there were a few expected high scoring games that welcomed game stacks including the Bills/Seahawks, Texans/Jaguars, and Falcons/Broncos, game stacking was not the winning formula in Week 9 as most of the popular bring backs in these games failed to provide value.
NFL $4M Fantasy Football Millionaire
On DraftKings, “MangioneMotorsports” was the million-dollar winner with a score of 238.02 point. It’s interesting that the winning score was relatively low again, for the second week in a row, despite the highest owned player on the slate putting up 42.02 points. Much of the reason for that is that six of the top 10 owned players didn’t crack double digit scoring and Chase Edmonds barely accomplished the feat.
This was the least correlated winning lineup of the season in the Fantasy Football Millionaire contest, with just a single stack build comprised of Drew Lock and Jerry Jeudy with no one coming back the other way from the Falcons offence. Every other winner of a million dollars this season has built around some sort of game stack correlation in lineup construction.
Spending up for double expensive RB with Cook and McCaffrey on a week where salary relief was in short supply was a truly unique build strategy. Gabriel Davis was the low owned difference maker for “MangioneMotorsports” as the Bills put together so much offence versus the Seahawks that three WRs all had big days. Davis near minimum salary made the lineup work as there were no clear options on the slate for salary relief. Despite it being his first game back following a long injury layoff Christian McCaffrey quickly reminded the fantasy football world that he can pay off nearly any salary.
This was the second single entry million-dollar winner of the 2020 NFL season on DraftKings.
NFL $300K Game Changer [$50K to 1st, Single Entry]
In the world of high stakes single entry contests on DraftKings “kancoltex” was one of the big winners with a score of 219.02 points. Like the million-dollar winner, the lineup was a single stack with no game stack correlation comprised of Drew Lock and Jerry Jeudy.
The double expensive RB build with Cook and McCaffrey was also the same. Lineup pieces from the other expected high scoring affairs between Houston/Jacksonville and Buffalo/Seattle included DJ Chark, David Johnson, and John Brown. Chark and Brown both had enormous days, but unfortunately Johnson left he game early with an injury. This just goes to show again that you don’t need to be perfect to win in single entry
In hindsight, getting McCaffrey at only 2.4% ownership was quite a boon and a solid leverage play on a week that Cook shot for the moon but most other RBs drastically underperformed. Justin Jackson was the highest owned player in the contest at 50.94% and left the game with an injury before scoring a single point. That combined with Tyler Lockett being the fourth highest owned player at over 43.4% putting up just 8 points put “kancoltex” well ahead of the field by just avoiding those two landmines.
$2.5M NFL Sunday Million
On Fanduel, the million-dollar winner on Sunday was “meer215610” with a score of 198.5 points. As it was on DraftKings, scoring was down overall this week, but this was the first million-dollar winning lineup this season to score below 200 points. The previous lower winner this season was almost 20 points higher at 219.3 points. Unlike on DraftKings though where cheap QB Drew Lock was the winning formula, a different cheap QB was the million-dollar winner on Fanduel. Almost no one expected the Panthers to even be competitive versus the Chiefs, but 0.7% owned Teddy Bridgewater stacked with his top receiver, 6.2% owned Christian McCaffrey, were good enough for a million dollars. All of Cook, Brown, McLaurin, Jeudy, and Jonnu Smith from the DK million dollar winning lineup also appeared in the Fanduel winner. Cook and Jeudy were the only players in the lineup that cracked double digit ownership, so it was truly a day for the contrarians.
Congratulations to all the big winners in Week 9 of the 2020 NFL DFS season!
