With a full slate of games available, Friday night is always a great time to play MLB DFS. With no game at Coors Field and a bunch of ace pitchers starting tonight, today may be a good day to pay up for pitching and find some value bats. Here are some picks to look at:
Jose Fernandez: The Miami ace is quickly becoming the MLB DFS version of Calvin Johnson. Sure, he may have some mediocre outings from time to time, but both his floor and ceiling are sky high. With a career K/9 rate of 10.3, you know he’ll get you some strikeouts, with the potential of also giving you a complete game shut out. Tonight, he has the dream matchup of the San Diego Padres at PetCo Park. Our dream matchup of King Felix versus the Astros didn’t work out so well last week, but we can’t run bad like that every week. As long as his price isn’t out of the stratosphere, draft him.
In our 3-on-3 matchups at Sports Tradex, Fernandez is on “Land of the Freeman” with Freddie Freeman and Jayson Werth against “Wacha Waiting For,” composed of Michael Wacha, Prince Fielder, and Jed Lowrie. I like Fernandez’s team in this matchup since I think he’s the better pick for tonight compared to Wacha, who faces a much better Pirates team on the road. Fielder/Freeman are a wash in my opinion, but Jayson Werth gets the nod over Jed Lowrie since Werth crushes left-handed pitching.
Justin Verlander: If you are playing a site that gives a lot of points for a pitcher getting the win, then Verlander is a strong pick to make. Not only does he typically throw a lot of strikeouts, the Tigers are the biggest favorite tonight.
Francisco Liriano: The lefty can throw a lot of strikeouts and likely won’t be priced too high on most salary cap sites since he has gotten rocked a few times this season. Nonetheless, the Cardinals-Pirates game will likely be a low scoring affair, and Liriano is still a stud. He’s a potential value pick with a sky high ceiling.
Adam Dunn: The White Sox will likely be one of the higher scoring teams tonight, and they face right-handed Brandon McCarthy. While most people will draft Abreu, I think Dunn has the better matchup here. Provided his salary isn’t too high and the site doesn’t punish batters too heavily for striking out, Dunn can be a rock solid pick tonight.
Jose Reyes: Reyes had a great game yesterday, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it continue into tonight when they play the Angels in a game that will likely have a lot of runs. He’s also generally not that expensive on most salary cap sites.
Matt Joyce: He’s been hitting in the 3-hole lately, which is great for his fantasy production. His salary generally is pretty modest too, making him a potentially great value play.
Paul Goldschmidt: The slugger has been on fire lately, homering in his last two games. He had a .954 OPS so far this year and is playing in a game with a high over-under tonight. To add to it, he still isn’t too expensive on a lot of sites. He makes another solid first basemen pick.
Leonys Martin: Look for a great value play here if he bats higher in the order. He hasn’t done much lately, but he’s likely overdue for a solid game. Depending on his salary, he may be a great pick to let you help you pay up for the top pitchers on the board.
